Sterling Heights is a city in Macomb County Michigan. It is the fourth largest city in the U.S. state of Michigan.
Sterling Heights is one of the larger suburbs of the city of Detroit. According to the 2010 census, the city has a total population of about 130,000.
The city also has a total area of about 37 square miles and is part of the Clinton River watershed – branches of the river flow through Sterling Heights.
The city was incorporated in 1968 and until the 1950s, it was predominantly an agricultural area. The most popular crop in the area was rhubarb and most of the crops that were grown in the city were sold in Detroit.
Before being incorporated as a city, Sterling Heights was known as Sterling Township.
The first mayor of the city once it was incorporated was Gerald Donovan.
Since there was already a small village named Sterling in Michigan, \"Heights\" was added to the township name, because while cities in different states can share the same names, cities within the same state cannot.
In August 2006, Money magazine listed Sterling Heights as number 19 on its list of the 90 \"Best Small Cities\" to live in within the U.S. It was also ranked the sixth safest city in the U.S. with a population between 100,000 and 499,999 by Morgan Quitno\'s 2006 analysis of crime rates.
One interesting fact is that famed rapper Eminem lived in the north end of the city briefly in 2000. The rapper originally lived in Detroit.
Sterling Heights is well known for several events, the most famous being the Sterlingfest, which is an event held in each summer in the city that features food stands and carnival rides. Live music is also a big part of this festival and some of the more famous groups that have performed at the festival over the years include REO Speedwagon and Rick Springfield.
Sterling Heights also hosts the American-Polish Festival every year, which is really popular because the city has a very big Polish population. The nearby cities of Troy and Warren also have a very large Polish population.
There is not much local economy to speak of, since it is a bedroom community of Detroit and a majority of the population that lives in Sterling Heights works in and commutes to and from Detroit on a daily basis.
